Wantage 1 lost their Division 2 match versus a very powerful MCS/B side. This is a match we would not have targeted to get anything from, as they outgraded us by an average of 26 points.
First, a solid effort by your writer saw a game down to a bishop and knight each with neither player able to make headway.
Next I thought Nicolas might win with the slight edge of exchange against a pawn, but essentially a perpetual check stopped this.
Finally, I applaud Roly (and his opponent) for keeping their cool in a tricky situation where a blunder would have been too easy to make, as time ran out. I was amazed that White kept on thinking about Roly's draw offer as his clock ran down nearly to zero.
On the other boards, Stephen was disappointed to overlook a zwischenzug that netted his opponent a piece, this time in a good position. I believe Gordon also lost a piece fairly soon. An extra pawn and passed pawn for his opponent spelled downfall for Peter.
Overall, not too bad an effort against the odds.
