The second team walked away from the last game of the season with a point against league toppers Didcot 3. This was a huge improvement on the reverse fixture , which saw us lose 5-1!

First to finish was Slava, who has had a cracking end to his season, scoring 3 victories in the last 3 games.

After that it was a bit of a blur to me as I was too involved in my own game to take much note. I was able to gain a fairly strong position in the early stages of the game, but my opponent slowly eroded this as the game continued. The first pawns were exchanged in move 16, and it wasn’t till move 27 another piece was taken, where I was able to grab a pawn on the A file. Despite my opponents best efforts to advance his King side pawns and force pressure, a lack of time and pressure from my own Queenside pawn advance gave me the victory.

Paul apparently had a slight advantage at one point, but lost on time

George agreed a draw in a double rook ending.

I didn’t see any of Steve’s game, but he told me he chose to protect a pawn advantage rather than castle and this weakened his position.

John’s was the last game to finish, and a draw was agreed with a king and 1 pawn apiece left.

The result leaves us fairly safe in 5th position, with only a 0-6 win by St Clare’s away to Cowley workers 2 allowing them to draw level on points and game point difference.
