We could however, and perhaps should have,  got something from the match.

Peter won a piece pretty early on, and said that the games was effectively over by about 8pm.   So we were off to a good start.

Martin had one of these games, that we all get from time to time, when he never got going and went steadily downhill

Reports  were that Roly had a winning position but lack of time was the cause of his loss.

My own failure to win was nothing short of criminal negligence.  I played well enough early on to get a positional  and a slight  material edge.  But then I concentrated on winning the exchange, missing better moves on the way that would have clinched it.  Then errors in the ending allowed my adversary to escape with a draw.
I understand that Andy had a draw in hand on Board 1 but played on for a win but things did nor work out as intended.
Mirka was left to complete the dead rubber but emerged with her second win for the team.  She was two or three pawns up in one of these tricky queen and pawn endings where the biggest problem is usually getting out of perpetual check while being able to advance her pawns.
