The first point on the board (and my first of the season) was surprisingly easy. I’m unsure if my opponent sacrificed a rook to gain a passed pawn, or just missed the long bishop, but a couple of moves later the victory was almost a formality.

By this time I noted that Peter was a piece up, and although a few pawns down in the end game managed to pick them off, and mated with a pair of bishops.

Steve (in a curiously mis-matched pairing) was a knight down, and his pieces looked fairly hemmed in. As this is Steve’s first match of the season, and he was out-ranked by 40 points I think he performed well.

Paul was a pawn up early on, and had a strong attack, with his opponents pieces stuck on the wrong side of the board. After sacrificing several pawns to free up some room to manoeuvre, his opponent began his counter attack. With an advanced pawn and an exchange up Paul should have won, but in his haste to promote he missed his opponents checkmate.

Slava was also a piece down, put plenty of pressure on with a passed pawn, but his opponent was ultimately able to bring checkmate.

I missed almost all of Johns game I’m afraid, but he was down material from the little I saw.
